What are clickbait titles?

A clickbait title is a headline or title tag written to make people click by exaggerating, withholding key information or promising something the page does not deliver. It is not named as a spam policy for web search, which is why it sits in the grey zone rather than black hat.

A person inspects a glowing exclamation mark on a large screen, representing the allure of clickbait titles.

The line is accuracy. A title that is specific, interesting and true, such as “7 houseplants that survive low light (tested over a winter)”, is good copywriting. A title like “This one plant will change your life” on a generic list, or a news headline that misstates the story, is clickbait.

Google’s guidance asks for titles that are descriptive and avoid exaggerated or shocking wording, and its Discover content policies specifically warn against clickbait and misleading titles. Google also rewrites titles in results when they do not describe the page well.

Why clickbait titles matter for SEO

Clicks matter, and a strong title tag can lift click-through rate from the same ranking. But if visitors bounce because the page did not match the promise, you lose their trust and Google may rewrite your title.

The white hat alternative is a title that leads with the keyword, says what the page delivers, and adds a true detail that makes it worth choosing. SEO copywriting covers this. See grey hat SEO for where this sits.

Risks of clickbait titles

  • Google may rewrite titles that do not reflect the page, removing the hook you wrote.
  • Readers who feel misled leave quickly, and the page loses trust and links.
  • For news sites, misleading headlines can breach Google News and Discover policies and lead to a manual action there.
  • Long-term brand damage when people learn to skip your results.

How to write clickable titles without clickbait

  1. Start with what the page is about, using the keyword people search for.
  2. Add something specific and true: a number, a year, a format, a result.
  3. Check that the first screen of the page delivers what the title promises.
  4. Avoid all-caps, shock words and teasers that hide the subject.
  5. Watch CTR and engagement together: a title that raises clicks but sends people straight back needs fixing.

What is the difference between a catchy title and clickbait?

A catchy title makes a true promise interesting. Clickbait makes a promise the page does not keep.
