About the project

Why OpenSEO

OpenSEO is a free, open-source SEO platform for you and your AI agent. Research keywords, track rankings, audit your site and watch how AI assistants talk about you, online or on your own server, with every line of code in the open.

What is OpenSEO?

OpenSEO is an open-source SEO suite, MIT licensed, that you can use at openseo.gg or self-host with Docker. It covers keyword research, rank tracking, backlinks, site audits, AI visibility, local rankings and Search Console reports.

It is built for people who want SEO data without a monthly suite: the software costs nothing, and the search data you look up is billed per lookup to your own key, under a limit you set. AI agents can use every feature through the OpenSEO MCP server, so you can ask Claude or ChatGPT to do the research and save the results to your project.

Who it is for

Who OpenSEO is for

Three kinds of people use it most, and the same workspace serves all three.

  • Business owners doing their own SEO

You want more customers to find your site, without learning a big SEO suite or paying for one every month.

    • An AI agent that explains what the data means and picks the next step
    • Free site audits and Search Console reports for your own site
    • A monthly spending limit, so a busy week never becomes a big bill
  • Marketers and agencies

You already know SEO. You want one place per client for research, tracking and reports, and an agent that can do the legwork.

    • One project per site, each with its own goals and notes
    • Rank tracking, backlinks and AI visibility in one workspace
    • Change the skills to match your own process
  • Developers and AI builders

You want SEO data your code and agents can call, on infrastructure you control.

    • A REST API and an MCP server with every feature
    • MIT licensed: fork it, extend it, ship it
    • One Docker command to run it on your own server

You are in control

What makes OpenSEO different

Closed suites decide what you see, where your data goes and what you pay. OpenSEO is built the other way round.

  • Open source, all of it

The app, the API, the crawler and the MCP server are MIT licensed. Nothing is held back for a paid edition, so you can read every line and change what you need.

  • Your data stays yours

Self-host with Docker and your keywords, rankings and audits live in your own database. The hosted app runs the same open code, so you can see exactly what it does with your data.

  • You decide what you spend

OpenSEO never charges you. Search data is billed per lookup to your own data key, every call is listed with its cost, and a monthly limit stops spending past it.

  • Built for AI agents

Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, Codex and Gemini can use every feature through the MCP server, with a cost ceiling on each paid call so an agent never spends more than you agreed.

AI agents

OpenSEO with your AI agent

Connect the agent you already use and it gets the whole workspace: live search data, your projects and a place to save its work.

Each project keeps shared notes on your goals, audience and competitors, so the agent remembers your business between sessions. Skills give it a process to follow, and you can change them to match your own.

OpenSEO skills for agents

  • SEO coach

Learns your site and goals, sets up the project and picks the first things worth doing.

  • Keyword research

Finds keywords worth targeting, groups them by intent and saves the best ones.

  • Competitor analysis

Works out a competitor’s traffic, best keywords and the gap with your site.

  • SEO audit

Audits any domain from search data and turns it into a short action plan.

  • Site audit

Crawls your site for free and finds the technical fixes most likely to help.

  • Search Console review

Finds queries one push from page one and pages losing ground.

  • Local SEO

Checks a business on Google Maps, its reviews and where it ranks street by street.

Two ways to run it

Hosted or self-hosted OpenSEO

The same code runs both. Pick the one that suits you, and switch whenever you like.

Hosted at openseo.gg

Sign up and start in a minute. Every feature is unlimited today. OpenSEO is an early, independent project, so the hosted app may get usage limits later; if it does, we will say so well in advance.

FAQ

OpenSEO FAQ

What is OpenSEO?

OpenSEO is a free, open-source SEO platform at openseo.gg. It covers keyword research, rank tracking, backlinks, site audits, AI visibility, local rankings and Search Console reports. You can use it online or self-host it with Docker, and AI agents can use every feature through its MCP server.

Is OpenSEO free?

Yes. The software is MIT licensed, self-hosting is free and unlimited for good, and the hosted app is free with every feature unlimited today. Search data such as keyword volumes and backlinks is billed per lookup to your own data key, never by OpenSEO. See pricing.

Where does the OpenSEO source code live?

On GitHub at github.com/duckduckdeploy/openseo, under the MIT licence. The code there is the same code that runs openseo.gg.

Are there other tools called OpenSEO?

Yes, other projects use the same or a similar name and are not related to this one. This OpenSEO lives at openseo.gg, with its code at github.com/duckduckdeploy/openseo.

Does OpenSEO work with ChatGPT and Claude?

Yes. Connect Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, Codex or Gemini to the OpenSEO MCP server and your agent can research keywords, check rankings, audit sites and save its work to your projects. The MCP setup guide walks through it.

Can I self-host OpenSEO?

Yes. One Docker image and one compose file run the database, API, dashboard and site on your PC, a home server or a small cloud server. Every feature is unlocked and unlimited. Read the self-hosting guide.

Is OpenSEO an Ahrefs or Semrush alternative?

For many sites, yes. It covers the research and tracking most people use those suites for, without a monthly plan. Compare OpenSEO vs Ahrefs and OpenSEO vs Semrush to see where each one is stronger.

Your SEO, on your terms.

Start online in a minute, or run the whole suite on your own server. It is open source either way.
