Content freshness

Also called freshness, query deserves freshness, QDF

What is content freshness?

Content freshness is how recent and up to date a page’s content is. Google uses freshness as a signal for queries where recent information matters, such as breaking news, recurring events, prices and fast-changing topics, an idea often called “query deserves freshness”. For timeless queries, such as how to tie a bowline knot, freshness matters little.

Google has said its systems try to show fresh content where it is expected, and introduced a freshness update in 2011 that made results more timely for those queries. Freshness is about the content actually being current, not the date shown on the page.

Why content freshness matters for SEO

For time-sensitive topics, an outdated page will lose to a current one however strong it is. “Best laptops”, “mortgage rates”, “iPhone release date” and annual comparisons all reward pages that are kept up to date with a regular content refresh.

Freshness also matters for AI search. Assistants with web search tend to prefer recent sources for current questions, and an out-of-date page can lead to your brand being quoted with old facts.

How to keep content fresh

  1. Identify which of your topics are time-sensitive by looking at whether the top results are recent.
  2. Schedule reviews for those pages: monthly or quarterly for fast-moving topics, yearly for slower ones.
  3. Make meaningful updates: new data, current prices, new products, changed advice.
  4. Show a visible “updated” date and keep it truthful; use datePublished and dateModified in structured data.
  5. Don’t change dates without changing content. Google’s guidance specifically warns against it.

Content freshness FAQ

Does Google prefer new content?

Only for queries where recency matters. For evergreen questions, an older page that answers well can outrank newer ones.

Does updating the published date help rankings?

Not on its own. Google advises against changing dates without substantial changes to the content.
