What is keyword stuffing?

Keyword stuffing is loading a web page with keywords or numbers in an attempt to manipulate its rankings, so the words appear out of context or in unnatural lists and repeats. It breaks Google’s spam policy on keyword stuffing and makes pages harder to read.

A broken white box overflows with many small square tiles featuring stylized letter symbols, representing keyword stuffing.

Google’s examples include lists of phone numbers with no real value, blocks of text listing the cities and regions a page wants to rank for, and repeating the same words so often the text sounds unnatural. Stuffing can also hide in title tags, alt text, meta tags and footers, or be combined with hidden text.

It is a leftover from early search engines that counted keyword repeats. Modern ranking systems understand topics, synonyms and context, so repeating a phrase adds nothing and can trigger spam systems.

Why keyword stuffing matters for SEO

Keyword stuffing is still common, often by accident, when people follow outdated keyword density targets. Google has no ideal density.

The white hat alternative is content optimisation: use the main keyword where it fits naturally (title, H1, opening), cover related subtopics and questions, and write for the reader.

Risks of keyword stuffing

  • A “Hidden text and/or keyword stuffing” manual action in Search Console.
  • Algorithmic demotion: stuffed pages read as low quality and tend to rank worse, not better.
  • Lower conversions, because stuffed copy is hard to read and looks untrustworthy.
  • Wasted time writing and maintaining copy that only exists for search engines.

How to spot and fix keyword stuffing

  1. Read the page aloud. If a phrase repeats in a way a person would not write, it is stuffed.
  2. Look for lists of city names, keyword variants or phone numbers in footers and sidebars.
  3. Check title tags and alt text for strings of comma-separated keywords.
  4. Rewrite with one clear use of the main keyword where it belongs, and synonyms and related terms elsewhere.
  5. Replace location lists with genuine local landing pages only where you really serve that area with something specific to say.

Keyword stuffing FAQ

How many times should a keyword appear on a page?

There is no set number. Use it where it reads naturally, usually in the title, H1 and early on, and let related words do the rest.

Is keyword stuffing in meta keywords a problem?

Google ignores the meta keywords tag, so it neither helps nor counts as visible stuffing, but it is wasted effort.
