Review response rate

Also called owner reply rate, review reply rate

What is review response rate?

Review response rate is the percentage of a business’s online reviews that the owner has replied to. If a profile has 200 Google reviews and the owner has replied to 150, the response rate is 75%. It is a simple measure of how actively a business manages its reputation.

Some people also track response time, meaning how quickly replies are posted, and look separately at replies to negative reviews, since those matter most to people reading them.

Why review response rate matters for SEO

Google encourages businesses to reply to reviews and says it shows customers you value their feedback. Whether replies directly affect rankings is not confirmed, so treat response rate as a trust and conversion measure rather than a ranking lever.

Replies are public and appear under each review on your Google Business Profile. A calm, helpful reply to a complaint can reassure future customers more than the complaint puts them off. Ignored complaints suggest nobody is listening.

How to respond to Google reviews

  1. Reply to every review, starting with negative and recent ones.
  2. Thank the customer by name and mention what they mentioned, so replies do not look copied.
  3. For complaints, apologise for the experience, explain briefly if useful, and offer to continue offline.
  4. Never share private customer details or argue in public.
  5. Set a routine, such as checking for new reviews every few days.

Review response rate example

“Thanks, Priya. Sorry the delivery arrived late on Saturday. That is not the standard we aim for. I have passed this to our driver team, and if you reply to our order email, I would like to make it right. Sam, owner.”

Review response rate FAQ

Should I respond to every Google review?

Yes, if you can. Google recommends replying, and it shows customers that you read and act on feedback.

Do review replies help local SEO?

Google has not confirmed replies as a ranking factor. They clearly help reputation and can improve how many searchers choose you.
