Traffic value

Also called organic traffic value, traffic cost

What is traffic value?

Traffic value is an estimate of what a website’s organic search traffic would cost if the same clicks were bought through paid search ads. For each keyword a site ranks for, a tool multiplies the estimated monthly organic clicks by that keyword’s cost per click, then adds up the results across all keywords.

A balanced scale comparing stacked circular and rectangular items, each with a down arrow, representing traffic value.

It is a model, built on two estimates: traffic (from search volume, position and a CTR curve) and CPC (from advertisers’ bids). Treat it as a way to compare sites, pages and periods, not as revenue. Keywords with no ad competition contribute nothing, however much traffic they bring, so informational sites can look less valuable than they are.

Why traffic value matters for SEO

Traffic value weights traffic by commercial intent. A thousand visits from “best accounting software” are worth more to a business than a thousand from “what is double-entry bookkeeping”, and CPC reflects that. It gives a better sense of which pages matter than raw visits do.

It is also a simple way to put SEO in money terms for people who know paid search, and a starting point for an SEO ROI case. Use your own conversion data for the real figure.

Traffic value example

A page gets an estimated 800 visits a month from “project management software” (CPC $18) and 1,500 visits from long-tail informational terms with an average CPC of $0.40. Its traffic value is (800 × $18) + (1,500 × $0.40) = $14,400 + $600 = $15,000 a month.

Traffic value FAQ

Is traffic value the same as revenue from SEO?

No. It is what the clicks would cost as ads, not what they earn. Real value depends on your conversion rate and order values.

Why is traffic value low for a site with lots of traffic?

If most of its keywords are informational with little advertiser competition, their CPCs are low or zero, so the traffic counts for little in this model.
