What are link farms?

A link farm is a group of websites or pages that link to each other, or to any site that pays or joins, with the sole aim of inflating link counts for search rankings. The pages carry long lists of unrelated links and little real content. Link farms are a form of link spam under Google’s spam policies.

Link farms differ from private blog networks mainly in effort: a PBN tries to look like real blogs, while a link farm makes little attempt to hide. Automated link-building tools often create links on link farms, low-quality directories and bookmark sites, all of which Google’s policy names.

Why link farms matter for SEO

Link farms belong to the early days of search, but they are still sold as cheap “1,000 backlinks” packages. Google has ignored this kind of link for a long time, so they rarely do anything except clutter your link profile.

The white hat alternative is fewer, relevant links from sites with real readers, earned through link building such as unlinked mention outreach.

Risks of link farms

  • An “Unnatural links to your site” manual action.
  • Links ignored by Google, with no ranking value at all.
  • Your site associated with spam neighbourhoods in your link profile.
  • Cleanup work to remove or disavow large numbers of junk links.

How to spot link farm links

  1. Look for referring pages with dozens or hundreds of outbound links to unrelated sites.
  2. Look for sites whose only content is lists of links, “resources” or directories with no editorial standards.
  3. Watch for big bursts of new referring domains with no matching coverage or mention.
  4. Ignore them unless you bought them; if you did, or you have a manual action, disavow them.

Link farms FAQ

Can a link farm hurt my site?

Links you did not ask for are usually just ignored. If you paid for a link farm package, remove or disavow the links.

Are web directories link farms?

Curated directories that people use are not. Directories that accept anyone, have no audience and exist for links are treated as link spam.
