What is a private blog network?

A private blog network (PBN) is a group of websites controlled by one person or company and used to link to a target site to boost its search rankings. The sites are often built on expired domains with existing backlinks, and they pretend to be independent blogs. PBNs are a link scheme under Google’s spam policies.

PBN operators try to hide the network with different hosting, themes and owners, and fill the sites with filler content. Many sell links from their network to clients, which makes the clients’ links paid links too. Rebuilding expired domains for this purpose also breaks the expired domain abuse policy.

Why private blog network matters for SEO

PBNs are marketed as a way to control your own powerful links. In practice, they leave a footprint that Google’s systems are built to find, and when one site is caught, the rest often follow.

The white hat alternative is link building through digital PR and editorial links you earn on sites with real readers.

Risks of private blog network

  • An “Unnatural links to your site” manual action for the sites being boosted.
  • The whole network being neutralised at once, wiping out the value of every link in it.
  • Deindexing of the network’s sites.
  • High, wasted cost: domains, hosting and content for sites that exist only to pass links.

How to spot PBN links

  1. Look for linking sites with thin, generic posts on many unrelated topics and no real audience or social presence.
  2. Check whether the domains have a history as something else in the Wayback Machine.
  3. Notice shared footprints: the same theme, author names, contact details or outbound link patterns across sites.
  4. Check whether these sites rank for anything themselves; PBN sites usually have little or no organic traffic.
  5. Ask for removal where you can and disavow the network if you have or expect a manual action.

Private blog network example

A blog called “Home Garden Tech Life” posts one 500-word article a week on any topic. Each article links to a different commercial site with an exact-match anchor such as “best personal injury lawyer”. The domain was a bakery’s site until 2022.

Private blog network FAQ

Do PBNs still work?

Some still move rankings for a while, which is why they are sold. Google targets them directly, and when caught, the links stop counting.

Is owning several websites that link to each other a PBN?

Not by itself. Related sites you genuinely run can link where it helps users. A PBN exists to pass links and hides its common ownership.
